Chapter 7

Confrontation

Shelley woke to the furious barking of Jackson, which sounded curiously like, “warning, warning, intruder, look, intruder!” in her head. She sat groggily and her body complained. Then she remembered the pounding that Marcon and Ephren gave her. Oh, god, could she even walk? Her eyes took in the bed and saw it was empty.

A sense of alarm shot through her. Shelley bounded from the bunk and dressed as quickly as her hands would allow. Pounding noises sounded through the hull.

What time was it? She took her cell phone from her pocket and found it was only two am. Her father wouldn’t be back for another few hours, so it couldn’t be him.

Shelley cautiously looked out of the hatch and down the long corridor. She didn’t see either Ephren or Marcon. Jackson, however, ran up to her and butted her legs. Shelley stepped out of the corridor and with Jackson behind her followed its length to a hatch that was half open. She gave a hand signal to Jackson to sit and wait. With relief, she saw Ephren and Marcon seated inside in front of a large screen. A red icon winked furiously in the upper right hand corner of it.

“Godsdamn, her!” spit Marcon.

“We need to get Shelley and get out of this ship,” said Ephren. “It can’t take much more of this cannon.”

“I will fucking kill her!” said Marcon.

“What’s going on?” said Shelley.

Both Ephren and Marcon looked at her, worry in their faces.

“It’s complicated,” said Marcon.

“Some bitch landed who thinks she has a claim on Marcon and she’s come to get him.”

“A woman is pounding your ship with cannon fire to get you to go with her? Is she fucking stupid?”

They both looked at her dumbly as if the woman wasn’t out of line. “And what’s that red thing blinking,” Shelley said, pointing to the icon.

“Incoming communication,” said Ephren.

“From her?”

“Yes,” said Marcon.

“Well, answer it!”

“Yes, ma’am,” said Marcon. Ephren shot him a look as Marcon pressed something on the panel in front of her and a beautiful but angry white-haired woman filled the screen.

“Who are you?” demanded Shelley.

The woman’s eyes curled in suspicion.

“I can ask you the same. I’ve come for the Soenu male. I offered a reasonable negotiation for him.”

“Hon,” she said putting her hand on Marcon’s shoulder. “Just where is she?”

“Two hundred yards north from here.”

Shelley nodded.

“Well, too bad. He’s mine now.”

“You? What can you offer him on this backwater planet?”

“Not your concern. Get off my land.”

“Your land?” The woman sounded shocked.

“Yeah, look around. As far as you can see, it’s mine.”

The woman’s eyes narrowed.

“That can’t be. No one owns that much land.”

“Well, I do. So get going before you find out just how much trouble you’re in.”

“This is an outrage. I’ll get the authorities involved. I’ll find your family, Marcon, and get them here. I’m sure they’ll love to know where their son landed.”

If possible Marcon’s face blanched even whiter.

“Get back on your broom, witch and fly out of here,” snarled Shelley. “Or do you want
